8th December 2009 - Parker tasting Rioja report |
< Back |

Kilikanoon’s The Duke 2006 Grenache recently had the great honour to be chosen by Robert Parker as one of his 18 great Grenache for a unique tasting at the Rioja Wine Future conference last month. (the other Australians were Torbreck, Clarendon Hills and Greenock Creek). 533 people, over 10,000 Riedel glasses.
Whilst Mr Parker was careful not to offend anyone with too much praise or criticism, having chosen the wines, others were more forthright. Jancis Robinson reviewed all the wines and had this to say about The Duke.. “Very light ruby. Sweet and fresh and juicy. Excellent balance. Real dancing life here. Not too heavy. Just a hint of dried fruit but no uncomfortably dry tannins. A real success, and probably the best Australian Grenache to have come my way.” Perhaps the greatest accolade was however from Philippe Cambie, the consultant winemaker who makes many of the great Chateuneuf du Pape- they call him the Michel Rolland of the Rhone! He loved all our wines, and we did some swapping- I now have (in France) some of the great 2007 southern Rhones...
The good news is that we still have a little of the 2006 Duke available.....
